unique 2 level rat/degu home (NDG)

Its looking like my rat finally has a new home...so I'm going to post this a few more times and start contacting people on Friday (Nov. 27th) to see if there still interested…I still have the offers from the last few times I posted this so if you've already made an offer no need to contact me again...unless you want to offer a different amount than before.

Custom designed rodent cage. Basically I wanted to keep my pets in the living room, but thought all the cages I could find were kinda ugly and not something I would want in my living room, so I created my own. I’ve kept both rats and degus *at different times, I’m pretty sure rats and degus would not live in harmony together* in this set up and I didn’t have any escapes.

Home consists of…

2 x 20 gallon aquariums (12”x24” x 17” high)

1 glass shelve (about 7” x 19.5”)

1 Tunnel connecting top aquarium to bottom aquarium

1 cat guard (so kitty’s claws cat get at the rodents when there in the tunnel)

1 stand

It’s hard to part with this cage, hours of work (and $$) have gone into creating it. But I’ve developed an allergy to rats and I wasn’t too fond of degus as pets, so after I find my current rat a new home, I have no use for it.

Since I can’t put a price on this piece of art, I decided to see what kind of offers I would get. An auction style craigslist ad, I don’t know if this is going to work.
Send me a price and I’ll contact the highest bid to see if they are still interested once my rat has a new home and move down the list of bidders until I find someone to take it.

Design points…

•	Tunnel through opening cut in top aquarium floor (with aluminum guard) to glass shelve suspended in bottom aquarium.

•	Openings cut in sides of aquarium stand so more light will get to the bottom aquarium.

•	No debris escapes! The glass of the aquarium keeps everything in, and allows you a better view of your pets.

•	Easy to clean. Sweep, spray and wipe.

•	Access doors at both levels.

•	Small footprint, it only takes up 16” x 30” of floor space, but rodents have lots of room, about 713 square inches if my math is correct, because aquariums are stacked.

•	Suspended glass shelve in bottom aquarium.

•	Made of glass, chicken wire, and copper (stand wood and steel, both painted black)

Add ins…

•	Food dish

•	Water mug (chipped but functional, it’s really heavy and never has been tipped over)

•	4” fan (plugs in). Very important, without this animals will overheat in Montréal summer since there in glass (no breeze).

•	Cleaning shelve. Allows bottom aquarium to be pulled out and rest on this shelve for easy cleaning

•	Mini broom and dustpan for cleaning

•	4” “flexible aluminum foil ducting" (25 feet long) and copper attachments – this creates a tube coming out of the top of the cage and going wherever u want. I usually drape it over a chair and then to the couch. This creates a tunnel so the rat can come and go as it pleases from its cage.

•	Paper shredder ( for bedding)

Thanks!

Wild Rabbit Rehabilitator? (Montreal)

I know of someone who raised wild rabbits from babies after being abandoned. I would really like to see them re-released but unfortunately none of the wild life organizations take them because they are so tricky. I know there is a woman out there somewhere who does take wild rabbits and I would believe re-releases them after the appropriate measures first. I would like to get in contact with her if anyone knows any connections to her. For this specific rabbits and future ones, they are such a grey zone and no one is really willing to take them on.

Please contact me if you have any information or leads to her.

I would also like to be in contact with the person so raises and rehabs squirrels, another grey zone. There are so many and again wild life organizations often turn them down after being over loaded.

I have personally successfully raised, rehabilitated and re-release a wide variety of wildlife from raccoons, to bats and owls, birds, along with cats, dogs, and other small animals. In coalition with experts, wild life centers and specialized veterinarians. However right now I am focusing and have my hands full rescuing domestic pets.

I am just looking for responsible options with people who understand wild animals ARE NOT and SHOULD NOT BE PETS. It is very hard when there are so few wild life organizations.. and so much wild life. I am not comfortable leaving squirrels to be raised and kept by joe-blows because the wildlife centers are full.

I will be in contact with them, along with a specialized veterinarian to ensure the safety and reliability of the person. So people looking for wild animals as pets, or hoarders, please save your and my time.

RE: SUSPICIOUS DOG WALKING POST (Everywhere)

Hi
I am a professional dog walker, and I would like to share some helpful advice to all those who consider hiring a pet service provider.
1. Are they insured, bonded, registered?
A professional dog walker should be registered with Revenue Quebec, registered with a dog walking/pet sitting organization like Pet Sitters International or All Canadian Pet Services Network, and be insured (if they are insured with an organization like this, they are also bonded as well) (and if they have employees they should be insured and bonded as well.)
These requirements will help protect you, your dog, as well as the actual service provider which is important too!!!
2. Do they have references?
Any pet service professional should be able to, on request, provide at the least 3 references to existing clients. With my experience, a satisfied client would be happy to spend the time to speak to a prospective new client of their dog walker to provide feedback (it is not unacceptable of the pet service provider to say "let me contact a few of my clients, and see who is interested in being a reference and contacting you or having you contact them)...If they do not, or can not, this is a warning flag that should be taken into consideration.
3. What are their standards of practice?
Where do they walk dogs, how do they walk dogs, how many dogs will they/can they walk at one time, how do they handle dog fights, a dogs behavioral issues/challenges, issues with clients, billing and pricing (a professional pet service provider will more often than not have a website, advertising prices and price policies on their website), approachability (can I get in contact with them easily? do they return phone calls?), do they have forms/contracts to fill out before providing service, do they ask a lot of questions before working with your animal? ALL PET SERVICE PROVIDERS ARE SUPPOSED TO PROVIDE ONE FREE IN HOME CONSULTATION to evaluate the potential client and their pet before ever working with the client or animal.
4. Do they have relationships with other dog walkers, pet supply stores, and vet's?
Only you can be the judge of someone's service, however you can also get an idea of a pet service providers credentials by visiting pet supply stores and vet's in the area's that you live in, and that they operate in...if a pet supply store or a vet has never heard of a dog walker...what does this tell you...
5.The dog park....have their own social undercurrents, and take all advice and feedback that you get from dog owners with a grain of salt....and the dog park is NOT THE BEST way to provide your best friend with healthy exercise and socialization....it is good for a dog to visit the park, but it should not be the basis of a dogs daily exercise regiment!!!

I hope some of this information is helpful to all those in search of a dog walker/pet sitter.

We have recently taken in a stray cat to give her a new home, we had made an appointment to get her Spayed and have her medical work done on her but as it turned out about a week prior to her appointment she had a litter of kittens, which really took us by surprise to be honest becuase she was so darn skinny! We alrteady had two cats in the house prior to bringing her in therefore we are unable to care for and keep all her kittens, we now have 8 cats running around the house!
There has been no medical work done on the kittens so they will still have to be Spayed and Neutered along with any other medical work that is needed. We would just like to find them good homes, we are unfortunatly located a ways away from Montreal but we have no problems meeting people part of the way so that the trip is not to much trouble. I have attached four photos of four different kittens but we have five that are in need of new homes, the photos are unfortunatly not updated at the moment but I will very soon post new ones up, they have grown since these photos have been taken but they are only approximately 4-5 months old.
Please only serious enquiries because these kittens really do need new homes as soon as possible

Vanessa from L'ange Gardienne (http://www.langegardienne.com/) came over the other day to clip my dogs' nails. She was able to deal with my two huge nervous about nail cutting dogs, including my super strong dobie/GSD mix. It was ridiculously cheap too, considering. I used to send my one dog for grooming and it was always around $45 but she didn't need a bath at all since she's a short hair. They both got their nails clipped and I got a fabulous brush for almost the same price as it used to cost to just groom one. PLUS it was at my own house meaning I didn't have to take my poor dog with car sickness issues somewhere and have her barf all over. Awesome, super recommended!

Who are you to say who deserves or not to have a pet based on whether or not they put a collar on them?

I have two cats; I've had cats most of my life. I've never made them wear collars and that doesn't make me a 'bad parent'. It makes me someone with different views than you. Oh God! I also let my cats out in the summer. Can you imagine? Yeah, someone with say, more liberal views about what my cats are and what's good for them: curious creatures that weren't made to live in the confines of a 3 1/2 their whole life.

You don't see me judging people who don't see things the same way as me.

I don't go up to parents in the mall and tell them how they should raise their kids either.

But I'm such a horrible person according to you. I shouldn't even be allowed to have my cats. That's why last year, when one of them had a tooth abscess, which turned into 2, I forked out 800$ out of my non-existant student on loans and bursaries salary, more than my rent, to take her pain away.

That's also why I buy them Wellness, one of the most expensive cat foods out there (again, with my non-existent salary, while I do my groceries based on what's on special in the flyers this week). Because I like to know what's going in their tummies and sorry, but I feel feeding cats drug-store crapIAMS is like raising your kids exclusively on KD. I don't give a shit if you buy those 2 for 99cents cans of nothing-remotely-meat. You do what you gotta do; it's a free country. And mostly: what you do is none of my damn business. Likewise for you.

I love my cats to death and I don't believe in collars. Sue me.

Better yet: why don't you find yourself some Nazi board to promote your ideas of perfection.

Cause 4 Paws Feline Rescue is a volunteer, not-for-profit cat rescue group that rescues feral, abandoned, stray, abused and neglected cats and kittens, has all the vet work done (including the sterilizations and cats rescued from outside are blood-tested for infectious diseases), then seeks loving forever homes. We also seek foster homes to care for the cats and kittens we rescue on a temporary basis until they are adopted.

We have some designer kittens rescued from a pet store that was breeding them for sale, in other words a kitten mill, that is thankfully closing, that we have agreed to place for adoption. Two of these are special needs kittens. Because of the excreable conditions in whioch they were bred and raised, they have juvenile cataracts, and for them we seek a home with the finanical resources to take them to an opthamological specialist in veterinary medicine. They are Clyde and Cosmo, littermates. See photo of Clyde, the gorgeous long-haired gray and white fellow, below. We also have some kittens "adopted" for the summer, then abandoned at a campground in late August. Despite this variety, what they share in common is the need for a home and the capacity to love unconditionally.

We also seek loving forever homes for many young adult cats, all vaccinated and treated for parasites, some declawed. Among the many adults we have available for adoption, Chummy (female long-haired brown tabby declawed front), Goldie (little female golden tabby who has been looking for a home for a long time), and Jague (a handsome brown tabby and white large male cat) brought to us with a severely injured paw. You cannot now see where the surgery to repair his paw took place so completely has it healed.

We gratefully accept donations to help offset the enormous vet bills we accumulate during our rescue work, which includes a trap/sterilize/release program for feral cats to help stem the overpopulation of homeless cats at one of its sources. We also join the fight to permanently close down kitten and puppy mills. Please adopt a cat or kitten from a rescue rather than supporting this cruel industry by buying animals at pet stores. For further information please contact us at catwhisperer@sympatico.ca or call 514-684-4810 or visit our website at cause4pawsrescue.com
I would obviously pass on the litter box, carryer, and could also provide food for an extended period of time if it's an issue.

Most dogs don't need big huge medical expenses. I admit I may be a bit biased as I grew up on a farm and if a dog needed a $2K surgery we'd shoot it. :-P That's just how it rolls. As for $100 being a big chunk out of a year on welfare... hey, that or booze. Take your pick. Homeless dogs having fleas? Maybe. That's easy to treat. Not housebroken? Way easier to take an outside dog in than reverse. People take things way too seriously. Enjoy your dogs, love them up, they're not miniature sims projects. As for shelter... hey if it's not appropriate for a dog, it's not for a human either. It's a studied and shown fact homeless folks with dogs fare way better. I'll never rip on them for having and loving animals. No way. Better cared for than many, that's for sure.

We know that the earlier we treat her the better, but we just wanted to double check the options we have. Another female guinea pig of ours had the same problem, we took her to the exotic animal clinic on Sherbrooke, but she died during the surgery (didn't wake up after anastesia). This one also has painful urination, but has good appetite and seems somewhat active. We would really appreciate any advice on where is best to take our piggy for treatement (the majority of vet clinics only service cats and dogs, and we'd like to try another clinic this time). Thank you in advance!

With all due respect, the only thing that's rubbish is your claim that a doorway or underneath a bridge is a suitable environment for a pet (or a human, for that matter) in the middle of winter. And the only thing that's asinine is your suggestion to adopt a puppy from a homeless person who had no money to spay his dog because it'll be more "socialized". Give me a break. It would also be flea and disease ridden and probably not housebroken. You say he already has the dog, true, but it is a puppy, so he can't have had it that that long. Keep in mind that when you apply for welfare, it takes a month or two to start getting checks. Also, you can't get welfare unless you have absolutely nothing... so the truth is, when this guy got his dog he was not in a comfortable financial situation.

It's true that for the average person dog food and $100 a year for a vet checkup is nothing, but that's a big chunk of change if you're on welfare. This is why most people in this kind of situation don't bring their dog to the vet at all. They don't get them vaccinated or fixed. It wouldn't surprise me if six months down the line this dog's litter of puppies were up for adoption on this very forum, and as there are already too many unwanted puppies out there already, ended up at the SPCA being put down. That's the sad reality of encouraging ownership of pets by those financially incapable of taking care of them, sugarcoat it if you want.

I personally thing that since it Is the owners responsibility it is definitly there fault. And I believe the person who reported this happening mentioned that the person walking the dog didn t try to stop the dog & therefore did not take responsibilty. This added to the distress & situation & is what made it so bad.

And then you go on to say it would be the victims owners fault if there dog is continues to be trautized by the attack. Of course there are ways to help direct the attacked dog to recover, but that is easier said then done. It should be another thing the dog who attacked owners responsibilty to help with that also.

I also do not understand why you say that owners who have less sociable dogs - that they did not ask for it? If they have chosen to own or take care of such dog, it is once again there full responsibility. They are the ones responsible to do the most that they can do to redirect those type of dogs. Casear also has things like this to help with training. Or any other trainer that is reputable. Yes, there are pets who are not ever going to be prefect or anywhere near. But it is up to the person who takes them on to do what they have to, even if it is to walk them at times or areas that are less likely for others to be around, for them to get the exercise they need.

As a big black dog owner, I wish to participate in that discussion.

If your dog gets bitten by another dog, the best thing to do is to come to an agreement directly (pay the vet fee etc). Otherwise, you can choose to sue the person on her civil liability.

As for exceptions, we all love our dogs and do our best with them. The kindest dog with human can be a monster to another dog. Most people who have less sociable animals didn't ask for it and try to deal with it the best they can. Shit happens to everybody, I too dropped the leash once. Just remember that it's the owner responsability but not the owner's fault.

Last but not least, dogs are way better with resilience than we are. This is why so many shelter manage to rehabilitate strays or neglected dogs. If your dog keeps being traumatized, it's probably because that's what you encourage him to be because you were scared. The best thing to do is ask read Cesar Millan's book about reeducation or to ask for a dog trainer to help YOU to show your dog life is good and not all dogs are dangerous.

Ooooooh, "conservative welfare haters". I love the way you actually spat out the word "conservative" as though it were an insult-- it was very much a preview of the amusement that was to come. I actually don't lean that way at all-- but it doesn't surprise me that you would jump to that conclusion, as you have to so many others. I felt that since you were so certain you knew so much about me, I would correct you on a few small points:

" It is clear from your ignorance that you have never had to deal with a tragedy, loss of a home, loss of your physical ability to work or loss of a job. Or if you did, you had rich family members and/or insurance to bail you out."

The first of many instances in which you're wrong. I have had WAY more than my share of tragedies, tragedies much more earth-shattering than a divorce could ever be. And no, I had no rich family members to bail me out-- firstly, because when I had family they certainly weren't rich, and secondly, because my only family is dead-- hence the tragedy. As for insurance bailing me out-- well, yeah. That's the whole point of insurance. Though I wouldn't call it "bailing me out"-- I would say it was more like the result of having made a responsible choice to protect myself.

" I lived with friends and family for 4 years... I sent out over 2,000 job applications during that time with no luck."

Really? 2,000 companies didn't hire you, and yet you have a Master's degree? Where from, one of those online colleges? Or do you think maybe this could have something to do with your inherent hostility towards anyone with an opinion or political views that differ from your own? Interviewers tend to frown on that.

"Because I didn't want to be a burden to the people who so graciously offered their help, I went on Welfare for the first time in my life."

I see. So your friends & family don't have jobs then? Oh, they do? OK, they must get paid under the table then. No? Hmmm... well who do you think was paying for your welfare check?

"Do you know that, according to the free SPCA clinics, homeless people are the best caregivers to their dogs. They spend 24/7 with them, a lot more, I'm sure, than you spend with your pets."

Homeless people? Where did that come from? Are you even going to ATTEMPT to address my main point-- do you even remember what it was? But no, I'll play your way, let's talk about homeless people with pets. They have no SHELTER for their pets, first of all-- not a problem in the summer, of course, but do you even LIVE in Montreal? Are you honestly trying to tell me having a dog sleep outside in minus 30 degree weather makes you a great caregiver? Never mind the complete inability to provide a healthy, stable diet, if the dog even gets any food at all. As for them spending more time with their pets than I do with mine-- I'm sure they do, and I'm sure they spend more time with their pets than you do, too. See, that's because I have to WORK. If your dog could talk, do you think he would say, "Frostbite? Near-starvation? No big deal! Just spend more time with me!"?

"My first impression of you is that you either have pets as a luxury or status symbol, or just tolerate them because your kids want and love them."

Well, you've got me there. I was really looking for something that would make my life a lot easier and boost up the luxury levels a bit, so I though, what better than an FIV positive tabby? Ahhh, it's just like a day at the spa. My favorite is when I get to sift through her litter to get stool samples for the vet-- soooo relaxing. And nothing screams EXCLUSIVE like my Rottie/Lab mix-- I just stick her in my purse and away I go! I've even got her collars color-coordinated with my outfits. All the cool chicks have one-- I think I'm going to adopt an African baby next.

"I did not offer this person any cash. However, I did offer her some temporary work."

Did you? Why is that-- why not just give her money? Is it because, maybe, you feel people should reap what they sow-- that nobody's entitled to money for nothing, but making an honest living is honorable? Why, that's what I've been saying all along. But what's with all this "she" business? The original poster signed with a man's name. Can't even keep his/ her gender straight? Don't you realize the whole thing is a scam? Did you give "her" your address? Hope you have good locks on your doors. Or maybe you're just mixed up with regards to the person's gender because you're making this up?

"My advice: wake up and smell the coffee, get off your high horse, get off this site, and most importantly, stop complaining about people that you have a pathetic lack of understanding about"

Wow. I had to read that one 3 times to be sure I was actually reading right. Really? You're ordering me off of ALL OF CRAIGSLIST just because I have the audacity to disagree with your views? Who exactly are you to speak on behalf of the MILLIONS of people who use this site? And while we're on the subject of "complaining about people that you have a pathetic lack of understanding about", what would you call your frothing-at-the-mouth rant about someone you've made a plethora of mistaken assumptions about without any actual information to back it up?

The bottom line is: I know you don't agree with my views, and I really don't care. It's pointless to argue because you're not actually addressing any of my points; your argument amounts to a 6-year-old's "you're a meanie!" (which, might I add, casts doubt on your claim to have a Master's degree, which in any field I can think of requires the ability to construct a rational argument and address the points of debate brought up by your opponent). I might as well try to prove the theory of evolution to the Pope. I stand by what I said, and if your counterargument is that the unemployed take better care of their pets and those in dire circumstances need pets for the emotional support they provide then that's just pathetic. Would you suggest that a depressed and unemployed woman have a child to boost her mood, even though she couldn't afford the basic essentials like diapers and Similac? Adopting a pet means making a commitment. It means taking on a responsibility; a huge one-- one which, when referring to a dog, will last 15-20 years. A dog is not there to be your emotional crutch-- get a therapist! That helpless creature depends on you to feed him, to provide him with shelter, and to make his pain go away when he's hurting and scared because he doesn't understand what's going on. If you can't afford vet bills, then don't get a dog. The end.

I am not the earlier poster but some of the post was not Rubbish. Although I agree with your first couple sentenses. I personally do not agree that Pets are not expensive. Even the normal fees add up. But the bills from ill health & accidents are very high. And although there may be a bit less expensive places to take them to, it still is more then some people can handle.

It is fine for people to ask for help & it is fine for whoever wants to offer help, but if not enough is collected and the people can t pay their pets bills, that is a problem when the owners can not take proper care of them.

So it is not enough to take care of the emotional & proper exercise of the pet. They also need to be able to take care of their medical bills.
People on welfare deserve pets too. There's nothing wrong with that at all. He already HAS the dog isn't going out getting a new one. Pets are not that expensive. Most dogs see a vet once a year if that and are perfectly fine on regular pet food. Mine have had their same leashes and collars for years no problem.
And to the original rant, homeless people don't live directly outdoors in winter in Montreal or they'd be dead too. They hide in alleyways, door openings, under bridges, in makeshift shelters etc. They don't starve, their owners feed them before themselves. In fact most of them have a dog so they stay off drugs because they have to spend on the animal first. And those dogs would much rather be with their owners than in a damn crate 12 hours a day in some frou frou westmount semi-detached. I swear, next time I want a puppy I'm gonna get one from some homeless person who couldn't get their dog spayed in time, pay for the spay, and get me a really nicely socialized and exercised pup. Dogs need not much, extremely basic shelter, food, a damn good walk each day, socialization, love... all of those can be given by a homeless person. And a person on welfare is even more equipped. Your idea that the vet may be helping them scam is absolutely asinine. Way too much paranoia in this world.

I do agree on one important point tho. Pls reconsider if you're planning on giving this person money. There are many ways in which it could be a scam even if the vet does exist. Vets aren't immune to corruption, or maybe this vet is a friend of this person and is going to give him the money but it's not for a dog at all... there are lot of possibilities. Even if it's legit it's true that someone who has no money shouldn't get a cat or dog. Sometimes things can come up that cost a lot of money and even just every day stuff like food, litter, toys, isnt cheap. It's not fair to the pet who deserves to have an owner who can take care of her properly, so ppl you shouldn't encorage this selfishness.

hey! I'm going to be needing someone to walk (and possibly hang out) with my dog twice or three times a week in december around 4 o'clock each day for an hour or two. This could be a great way for your kid or teen to make some money before the holidays. My dog is a very happy, sweet guy who loves everyone. He's a medium size (35lbs) so not too strong for kid/teen.
Please email me with some information, and how much you would charge if you or your offspring would like to walk my dog!
Thanks a million

Thinking of Getting Someone a Puppy for Christmas --Read This

Pets don't make good Christmas gifts, but there are creative and more sensible ways to giving the gift of a cat, dog or other pet companionship.

During the first few weeks of the new year, animal shelters and humane organizations see a steady stream of cats, dogs, small animals and other pets that were given to someone as a Christmas present or holiday gift.

In the vast majority of cases, giving an animal as a gift for Christmas, Hanukkah, Easter or another holiday is a bad idea and very frequently, the ordeal ends with the dog, cat, pocket pet or other animal at the humane society's animal shelter. But fortunately, there are a few responsible alternatives for people who like the idea of giving a pet as a gift. This article will explore the reasons to avoid giving a puppy or kitten as a Christmas gift, while providing humane and sensible alternatives that will make for a happy pet and happy pet owner.

Why is it a Bad Idea to Give a Puppy or Kitten as a Christmas Present?
There are several reasons why pets that are given as holiday gifts rarely remain in their new home. Consider the following reasons why kittens and puppies make bad Christmas gifts.

•The holiday season is hectic. This makes it difficult to bond and care for a new cat, dog, rabbit or other pet. Kittens and puppies require a strict schedule, lots of attention, training, care and love. Combine the pet's needs with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and the result is often a pet with behavioral issues, an overwhelmed pet owner, or both.

•It's important for a new pet owner to connect with his new pet. It may seem like a good idea to pick out an adorable puppy or kitten for a parent, child or significant other, but this should always be avoided. Picking a pet for another person is much like arranging a marriage. The new pet owner must personally select his/her new cat, dog, guinea pig, hamster, ferret or other pet. When an animal lover decides to adopt a particular animal, there is always an underlying attraction - a reason why that particular person picked that specific pet. This initial attraction is vital - it's the first step in the bonding process between a human and an animal who will be sharing each other's home and lives for the next 1, 2, 5 10 or even 20 years. Selecting an animal to adopt is a very personal process that should be left to the new pet owner.

•It may not be the right time for a new pet. It's one thing to say "I'd love a dog." It's another thing to actually visit a breeder or animal shelter to adopt that new dog. Giving a dog, cat or other pet to another person can thrust the new pet owner into a bad position: the new cat, kitten, dog, puppy, ferret or other animal may be cute, and it may have a great personality and this may compel the new pet owner to keep the pet. The emotional element of pet ownership can override the sensible, logical mind that says "I don't have enough time for a puppy," "I don't have enough money to afford the vet bills," or "I travel too much to keep a cat." This can place the pet owner and the animal in a less-than-ideal situation that's unfair to both animal and human.

Alternatives to Giving a Dog, Cat or Other Pet as a Christmas Present

While it's never a good idea to give a live animal as a Christmas gift, Hanukkah present, birthday gift or Valentines Day gift, there are a few creative alternatives for someone who wants to give the gift of animal companionship to a loved one.

Give the gift of a few basic pet supplies or a small gift certificate to Petco or PetSmart. This will evoke the question of "What do I need this for? I don't have a dog/cat/hamster/ferret/iguana/etc." It's then that the gift giver can explain that his real gift is an all-expenses-paid trip to the animal shelter or breeder to select his new companion. This enables the gift recipient to select his own pet and it also gives the soon-to-be pet owner an opportunity to postpone the addition of a new pet to the household until the time is right.

Hello,

To all animal owners: I have had the displeasure of discovering that a lot of vets will over-charge you in this type of situation just because they know that a person will pay more when they feel that their animals life is in danger - sick I know, but it happens. I had one vet tell me that I would need to pay upwards of 1200$ to have stones removed from my cat's bladder. I did some checking around and found out that the vet was charging me for things that EVERY vet gets for free. (My new, awesome vet told me this when I showed him the vet bill print out.) In short, the surgery actually cost 400$, no extra bullshit, no "well we had to give him this and this so we have to charge you more...". Beware of emotional blackmail, I double and triple checked this situation because I didn't want to believe that vets can be satanists too, but it unfourtunately presents itself that way. (The SPCA also told me that that cost sounded insane.)

Anyway the awesome vet: Open for over 40 years now, it used to be run by the main vet's Dad - they have received awards for their tireless altruism in the plight of animal care. They (usually) allow payment plans if you can't pay everything upfront and they won't use your emotions to pillage your wallet.

Call Clinique Veterinaire Liesse 11575 Cote-de-Liesse 514 631 1533

* I tried looking into how to report the evil, blackmailing vet clinic but I was unable to find anyone to report them to. It's up to us to be smart about our beloved pet and who looks after them, I guess. Perhaps I will go and egg the shit out of the building instead, those bastards deserve it.

Good luck with your little pup,

I feed her a very healthy diet of organic fish-based cat food. She's living the good life. I need someone to adopt her because I travel about once a month and it's getting really difficult to find cat sitters often. It's too stressful for her to go from different home to different home where she's not allowed out. Please contact me if you would like to adopt her asap.
It's very important that new owner permits the cat to go outside. She doesn't like it much in the winter so she will stay indoors most of the time but from spring till fall, she loves the outdoors.

My 11 year old cat, Lucy, needs a new home...

I am very attached to her and it breaks my heart to have to give her away, but she has been peeing on my furniture for the past two months and I've tried absolutely everything to get her to stop. I do not want to put her to sleep and am hoping that someone will adopt her from me. She's never done this in the past, and the vet thinks that she is no longer happy living in my apartment (I live in a small place and am not home as much as I would like, as I'm a Doctoral student and am frequently on the McGill campus). I have another cat who seems to be fine, but for whatever reason, Lucy is no longer content. Blood tests and other exams have ruled out any medical cause for her inappropriate elimination.

Lucy is affectionate and cute. She's also very tiny - only about 5 pounds! She is an oriental/siamese mix and is odd-eyed (one green eye; one blue eye). She has an adorable little chirp of a meow and loves to eat treats. She is spayed and declawed (I adopted her about 4 years ago and her previous owner declawed her - personally, I would never do that to a cat).

If you are interested, please contact me. I respond to emails quickly.
Thanks so much,
I only found this out when I went to the police AFTER my dog was attacked by a black lab mix outside Chez Jose (St-Dominique/Duluth) last summer. It's the OWNER'S responsibility to keep his/her dog under control. I wish I had called the police immediately when my dog was attacked. The owner would have suffered consequences instead of getting away while I was stuck with a $700 vet bill and a traumatized dog.

I'm sorry about what happened to you and your pup. I hope you got the woman's name!

Hello Everyone,
We have lost our dog several months ago, we are located in a small country area and have been looking forever! We have searched in our region along as the surrounding areas but no one has seen our Perky around here, After months of searching in these areas it is now time to expand our search to everywhere.
Perky is a German Shepherd X Collie, he is Black and Tan with a long fur coat, Perky is about 9 years old, Medium to large breed and has a very distinctive scar on his left eye. This scar is due to a dog fight he had in his younger years!
If you have seen our Perky or have a dog that looks like him please PLEASE contact me immediately! He has been part of our family for years, he tried to find us when we left for vacation and even though we had someone watching the house and the animals while we were away, Perky managed to slip by this person and we have not seen him sense.
We have recieved information that he was possibly last seen near the Chateauguay New York Boarder!
Thank you to all and i hope for the best, I will be adding a photo of Perky as soon as i get close to a scanner, so please keep checking this ad to view the photo for a better view of him!

Help Save Neglected Sled Dogs In Canada

Imagine being left in a forest, chained to a tree, without regular access to proper food, clean water or adequate shelter. Imagine growing more and more desperate as the days and weeks go by, your cries unanswered.

For approximately 100 neglected sled dogs in Québec, this was reality until their owner surrendered them, and Humane Society International and the SPCA Laurentide-Labelle arrived to rescue them. Please consider a donation to help us stop this kind of suffering.

As we walked onto the property, my heart broke. The huskies had been chained to plywood structures over barren stretches of frozen mud. Hungry and dehydrated, they were unable to move more than the two-meter radius their chains permitted.

I am always amazed by the power of dogs to forgive. It was as if they realized we were there to help them, and slowly the miserable, emaciated huskies began to wag their tails as we approached. The dogs began to bark in excitement, but one remained quiet, waiting as his friends were rescued. I went to him and, as I grew closer, I realized he was blind because of cataracts—another casualty of the neglect these dogs endured. Carefully, we walked him to freedom, and the promise of a better life.

We arrived just in time. Winter is coming, and many of these dogs may not have survived without our intervention. With extreme cold temperatures approaching, these dogs—including a number of puppies—could have faced a horrific death.

Thankfully, our rescue operation was a complete success. One by one, we led or carried the dogs into our Emergency Services vehicle, and transported them to our emergency shelter an hour away—space generously donated by a local businessperson. There, dedicated volunteers from United Animal Nations will provide round-the-clock care, while SPCA LL veterinarians will treat and vaccinate the dogs. Once healthy, these deserving dogs will be adopted out to loving homes in Canada and the United States.

While these lucky dogs are now safe in their warm, temporary enclosures, so many more less fortunate animals across Canada still face neglect and abuse. With your help, we can ensure sled dogs and other animals do not have to face this kind of misery again.

Please give what you can to help us continue to fight cruelty by rescuing animals and advocating for stronger laws.

Together, we can make animal suffering a thing of the past.

O.K...Thanx so much to the person who went by the vet and gave 100$!!!!!!!
What happened today was that they took the cast off and did x-ray...Her skin started to rot,so there was no cast put back on her leg (yet.)...
Let me explain,The way it was broke, ended up healing wrong, the growth plate attached to the piece that was broken instead of the tibia, and that's creating space between the growth plate and the tibia already because she's growing too fast, and its only gonna get worse I gess. The vet is sending the x-ray to the hospital to get the opinion from an orthopedic(french word maybe)and will call back in a few days to let me know if she'll definetly need surgery, which means to re-breaking the leg and put some screws to attached the tibia to the growth platte. The other option sounds like cutting her leg off which I'm not really too happy with....As of right now it looks like the surgery would be about a thousand dollars, which I don't have whatsoever, and that's why I'm appealing to pet lovers who might be inclined to help the puppy because they believe its the right thing to do.Look man,if I had the money,I obviously would spend it on her, because that's what I've already been doing anyway. When I go out and hold a sign on the street corner, peoples don't even believe me anyway, and that's why I have to try to do it this way.You would be so nice and generous to help with any sort of donation straight through the vet clinic which is situated in westmount...324 ave Victoria,westmount,Que,h3z 2m8.and their phone#514-489-8217.Its not a scam, you can look them up on google, and its a very, very nice clinic with very nice peoples working there. All help with donation goes straight to the cost of the help needed to get the dog back to health.Again Thanx so much for anything at all.
Also my girlfriend is looking for work cleaning houses, she's done it in the past and has good reference,so please e-mail me if you want to offer some work to her.I will also be happy to go work if you have work for me too.

My puppy was brutally attacked by a large black dog (looked like a German Sheppard) at 7:30 this morning, corner of Kensington and St. Catherine.
The owner stood there and did ABSOLUTLY nothing while my dog was screaming and getting torn to pieces.
He is a danger to society. I wish I would have gotten bitten then I could have criminally charged her but I was not.
PLEASE be careful of this dog. The woman owner dropped his leash (could not control him) and it was completely unprovoked.
I rushed my dog to the vets who is now recovering at home but is completely traumatized.

Hickory loves other canines and gets along with just about anybody, she is a very sweet, gentle natured dog, she is extremely nervous and scared at the moment but she is still under evaluation and we are working on this with great success ...So far she has allowed us to manipulate her and she just loves attention from people, she is a very affectionate dog that is just in need of a break. She showed up at the previous owners home hungry and pregnant, With the intentions of keeping her these people took very good care of her and her pups but in the end they could not keep her due to some wandering issues. She is a hound mix, therefore being on a leash while outside the property is absolutely necessary, and a fenced in yard is definately a plus. Hounds tend to follow their noses into all sorts of trouble and are quite good at getting themselves lost, she will need an owner who can acknowledge this and will respect leash laws and containment laws. As it turns out Hickory is not great with cats, she loves the chase but so far has not made any attempts to actually hurt the felines... of course like any dog that chases cats i would not put it past her.
Now that she is in our custody we are looking for the right home for her, she has yet to be tested with young children but i do not think this would be a problem due to her mild personality and temperament. She was definately abused early on in life, she is very curious and very trusting, she just doesn't know how to take attention and praise. One good thing we can say is that she doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body! If you have any questions regarding Hickory please do not hesitate to contact us at pennyspuppypaws@gmail.com and I will be more then happy to answer any of them!
Hickory is a Labrador X Plott Hound, she is approximately 2-3 years of age and she is one stunning girl!

Luna is another sweet dog that came to us by the dog catcher and was never claimed. She is a lovely little girl and very intelligent, Luna seems to know her basic commands and is clean in the kennel which indicates that she has been housetrained. Even though she knows her basic commands (sit, down, sit pretty, ect) some training will probably still need to be conducted because she does seem to pull on leash a bit, plus she is still just a pup so stay and come are not yet in her vocabulary. Luna is very high in energy, most likely due to being in a kennel, therefore this energy would probably die down once she is in her new forever home and out of a cage. Luna is approximately 8 months to 1 year of age and is a German Shepherd X with something smaller, she has just about reached her maximum size which is about 60-65 lbs

Hi,

A friend of mine rescued 2 female cats from the outdoors, and can no longer take care of them. They are both now indoor cats, and have adapted very well to indoor life over the years. One is a very sweet short hair white cat with beautiful eyes who is deaf, and so needs to stay indoors. The other is a very friendly and small, kitten looking, medium haired grey stripped tabby. The cats get along great together, but would also be fine separated, and will get along great with other cats and likely dogs. Please help these two girls out, they are such sweet, beautiful cats who need a new home.

I don`t mind traveling to the west island to meet half way for the right person to take the animals, or if you live near Rigaud, come visit the cats, you will fall in love. Email me with any questions. I can send pics to anyone interested. They are beautiful cats though.

Thanks so much.

Hi there,

I'm looking for a second cat to be a companion for my huge (19 lbs) white male cat. He's not over weight he's simple long and tall and big (counting his tail he's almost 3 feet long) He's 6 years old and I've had him since he was 6 weeks. Now I'm 22 years old and I go out alot so he spends alot of time alone sleeping. I have alot of love to give to a new pet and think he would really enjoy some company. I want to give him a puurfect girlfriend. She needs to be fixed, vaccinated and possibly declawed in her front paws as he is also and if they fight I dont want her scratching him. Age is not really an issue, its more a question of her being affectionate and calm and an indoor cat.

My personnal prefference would be for a black cat to make the perfect match! If its possible to have them spend a few days together to see how the ajust to each other that would be amazing also. If you absolutly want to get rid of your cat RIGHT NOW then I'll take her if she fits my description and if they don't get along I'll find her a new home and continue my search.

You can contact me at delmira_serphant@hotmail.com

Thanks,
Tom is a longterm resident of our rescue and is not up for adoption. If you agree to foster Tom, we would provide food dishes, litterbox, all his food and litter and all vet care is provided and paid for by the rescue.

Ambulance service gets pets to vets

Verdun-Based K911 is filling a need by answering the call for animal lovers seeking help for Fifi or Peanut
K911 partners Wayne Smith (left) and Rodney Maclean secure Jazz in the back of their pet ambulance for transport to the veterinarian outside the dog's Verdun home in 2008.

Nadia Simeone was grief-stricken when her 12-year-old dog Simba passed away suddenly in her sleep recently. But Simeone was comforted when two uniformed ambulance technicians for pets showed up at her door in Pierrefonds in 20 minutes. They came in with a doggie-sized stretcher and sat with her as she wept next to her dead companion, a German shepherd-husky mix. "They treated her with respect," Simeone, 40, said. "Like she was a human being." Canadians are expected to spend $2.1 billion on their pets in 2009, according to Euromonitor International, a global market analyst. That's a 2.5-per-cent increase over last year, indicating that despite a mainly grim economy, there's no shortage of animal lovers with money to spend on a new trend. In this case, it's a pet ambulance service.

Since it was started six months ago, Verdun-based K911 has made 600 calls in and around Montreal. The service picks up sick animals from the pet owner's home or the veterinarian, transports animals between vets for specialized care and picks up dead animals for delivery to pet cremation services. The cost for emergency pick-ups, available 24 hours a day, ranges from $119 to $159, but may vary depending on the size of the animal and the severity of the case. Dogs, cats, snakes and a hamster have been among the patients transported in the service's Mazda 3 hatchback and Dodge minivan, both painted fire-engine red and bearing the K911 logo. "We had one couple follow our car to the vet as I held their 10-pound bichon frisé in my lap," said Wayne Smith, 42, a former warehouse manager who started the service with Rodney McLean, 39, a former veterinary technician and salesman.
McLean and Smith started the service after a taxi driver refused to take McLean's injured dog for a ride to a veterinarian. "He wouldn't take us because our dog was bleeding," McLean said. "We thought 'there should be a pet ambulance.' " In their new roles, McLean and Smith have been vividly reminded of the extent people will go to for their pets. "We showed up at one place and the lady had three kids and not much in her house but mattresses on the floor," McLean said, recalling a low-income family. "Her dog had died and the kids didn't know. They were in the other room." The partners declined to accept payment for the transport. They just took the $45 the vet wanted to cremate the animal, McLean said.
"When we see what effect the animal has on families and kids, it really makes it worthwhile for us," said Smith, who grew up in a family of nine kids on a farm raising pigs and chickens in Newfoundland. Another call to K911 brought to mind how some people are in denial about their sick pet. "One couple, perfectly well-educated, had not moved their very ill dog for a few weeks," McLean said.
The dog "was not able to stand up to go outside (to relieve itself). His skin was stuck to the floor. He had to be euthanized on the spot (by a veterinarian who was called in)." Caroline Joanette, a Verdun resident with a 10-year-old German shepherd named Jazz that is having trouble moving its hind legs, has used K911 twice to transport her dog to the vet for check-ups. She finds the service reassuring.
"When I take her out she sometimes just stops on the stairs," Joanette, 34, an elementary school teacher, said. "I get extremely nervous because I can't pick her up (she's too heavy). I always bring my cellphone. I would call K911 if I had to." Irene Grossman, 66, said McLean and Smith were kind to her when they came to her Côte des Neiges apartment to take her 17-year-old cat, Tiger, to the vet to be euthanized. Grossman, who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident when she was 8 years old and who is legally blind, doesn't get out much, especially in winter.
"They were so gentle with Tiger," Grossman said. "I was bawling my eyes out."

Chloe, a beautiful rescued Ragdoll cross Maine Coon, is at present fighting for her life at Sources Animal Hospital. She was admitted Monday morning. Diagnosed with liver problems (she is jaundiced), anemia, and a possible blood infection, there is hope for a meaningful recovery and quality of life in the future. We do not keep cats alive if this hope does not exist. A loving foster mom awaits her. Her bills, however, as of about 4 pm today (not closing at 7 pm) are already $565 plux tax and counting, and this is with our rescue-group discounts with this vet clinic. Would you be able to contribute to Chloe's hospitalization costs? She is being given IV fluids and antibiotics, and has had blood-testing and X-rays. Please see photos of her before and during her illness. She can, with your help, recover and be the stunning, loving and affectionate cat she was. We see improvement as of late afternon today, or we would not persist in our efforts. Please call 514-684-4810 or write catwhisperer@sympatico.ca for further details on how you can help. Donations can be made directly to the vet clinic if you are more comfortable with this. On behalf of Chloe and all of us here at Cause 4 Paws, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Cause 4 Paws Feline Rescue is holding an adoption day Saturday November 21 at J E Mondou, 11,387 Blvd. Gouin W, Roxboro, 514-684-3223, from noon to 4 pm. Beautiful, gentle cats and kittens rescued from outside colonies, or who had been abandoned, abused, were stray, or otherwise homeless seek loving, permanent homes. Cats have been sterilized, vaccinated, treated for parasites, and those rescued from outside have been blood-tested for infectious diseases such as FIV and leukemia. All are in excellent health, and the veterinary record is included. We have litters of kittens, including two of Kelly's beautiful litter of supermodel kitens who are unhappy because they are now repeatedly being passed over for smaller kittens (pictured below is our little Dalmatian Rachel).

We have many teenage and young adult cats, in addition to many lovely young adult cats, already sterilized, including Angel, Barack, Berline, a beautiful gray and white female who has been looking for a home for a long time, Chloe, DC (a very handsome dark brown tabby), Emma, Jague (the handsome brown tabby and white, pictured below top right), King, Layla, Lynx (a sweet little tortie-tabby), Meteor, Molly, Serge (a handsome russet and white), and Smokey ( a long-haired smoke gray and black female), among others. Come meet Mr. Butterscotch with his awesome, boxer-like paws and thumbs, recently rescued from death row in a pound in the Laurentians for the crime of having been abandoned by his owners. He loves going outside, and is wonderful with children.

We will have some declawed cats available, including Chummy, bottom left. We also seek loving forever homes, second chances for pets cruelly abandoned in an outdoor cat colony in Pierrefonds, including a white cat named Snowball and a lovely black and white cat named Bandit. Please help these cats by offering them the permanent home they have never known, a temporary foster home, or help us with a donation to offset the enormous vet bills we accumulate in our rescue work. We are a volunteer, not-for-profit organization; all vet bills are paid out of pocket. The more financial resources and foster homes we have, the more cats we can rescue.

For further information, call 514-684-4810, write catwhisperer@sympatico.ca or visit our website at cause4pawsrescue.com We thank you for helping us help them. We will be selling cozy, hand-knit slippers as well as calendars to help us raise funds for our cause. Get a jumpstart on shopping for great Christmas stocking stuffers!

Vetrinary food for Cats with UTI/Cystitis - info

I agree with the water intake. It is always good for both dogs & cats. It is also good for them to have moist foods which will help to get more liquid in there system.

I personally do not agree with the need to add salt - which is not good for other health issues. Just as the sodium level is or humans. There is a more natural way to do this. Our pets need & want good fresh water - generally cats are even more finicky about this. So it is VEry important to change the water often & of course make sure the bowl is clean. Also cooler water is more desirable to them - so changing the water & not having the dish in an area is more heated then another. Also alot of Cats generally like running water - so thats where the idea of the pets animals drinking fountains. Although these still haved to be cleaned properly also & water changed. Just not as often as a bowl of water.

The Vets Food is horrible stuff - the ingredients in it are not good for them & when I asked my Vet what is in the food - it was added salt - added salt that makes them drink more. Acheives the goal - but not in a healthy way. Also that food is very expensive & for much worse quality. That includes the canned food they have. Much less the typical canned food in grocerys stores. You can get good premium foods without all the gunk that is nothing but filler.

When my 2 year old dog started having problems & we suspected UTI or Cystitis is when I did more research on these things. I do Love my Vet for other things. But they are not pet nutritionists. They apparently have just a bit of this in their training. And if your Vet has all the foods like Sciene diet, Royal Canin etc.... check the ingredients - they are known to be rated poorly. Yet are Very expensive.

I will check my bookmarks for a site that analizes sp? dog foods & rates them.

Vetrinary food for Cats with UTI/Cystitis - info

In most cases, the reason why cats develop UTI's and Cystitis is because they aren't hydrated enough, not getting enough water in their diets.

Before switching over to Medi-Cal vetrinary diet try going with an all wet food diet, even adding some salt water to the food. The increased salt should encourage more drinking and the increased water will help flush out the uriinary tract of any debris/crystals. (1/4-1/2 tsp. sea-salt dissolved in warm water before being added).

You might also try getting an eye-dropper bottle, filling it with fresh water and actually forcing water in small amounts down your cat, particularly if you don't see him/her drinking. It sounds cruel, but if done slowly and tenderly, it will be of some benefit and provide some relief. (You can even add a few drops of cranberry juice to the mixture).

In some advanced, chronic cases, Medi-Cal's Urinary health formula (or one like it) is the only solution. Unfortunately, vets are all too quick to push clients to the medicated food and its little wonder - they make a nice cut off the sale.

Please give my rat a new home (NDG)

I keep posting this hoping someone will take her....so here i go again...hello!!

Willow lost her sister Buffy in early Aug. (RIP Buffy) and has been very lonely since. I can’t play with her much because after acquiring these 2 lovely ladies in the summer of ‘08 I discovered I’ve developed an allergy to rats.

So I’m trying to find her a new home and family, either with someone who has a couple hours a day to play with her, or someone who will get her (or already has) a female rat buddy.

She has a diet that consists mostly of cereals and other things but is quite cheap and healthy. For both rats I think I spent maybe $40 a year on food.

Small adoption fee and a couple questions/request to be sure willow doesn’t end up as snake food.
