Innovative guitarist? (Plateau/Mile End/Montreal)

Established band with album and tour coming up this spring need to replace their very excellent guitarist who is gonna be a daddy soon. Tons of touring musicians have kids, but he's freaking out and I can't blame him. Anyway he's leaving quite the void but I have faith in the immense talent base that this city has to offer. What we do is a style of rock music that ranges from the psychedelic era of the Beatles and Syd Barrett-Floyd, to the stoner sludge of Sabbath, a little touch of classic Bowie, some early punk (love the Buzzcocks, for example), some late 70's/early 80's British underground (Joy Division, Bauhaus, JAMT), the Pixies/Frank Black, up to the modern age, with a little heavy mental thrown in for fun. So versatility is a must. I won't list the standard requirements for You, if you need 'em, please don't reply. If you feel like you might be up for it, let me know and we'll take it from there.

We are a 5 piece band looking for one more member to fill up the sound. Right now we are singer/guitarist, lead guitarist, piano, bass and drums. We are all in our 20's. We practice twice a week, play original material and want to play shows a couple times a month. Some influences are Wilco, Dylan, Cohen, Neil Young, Bright Eyes, Spoon, Ryan Adams, Beatles, Townes Van Zandt, a lot of other stuff.
If you sing or play any other instruments that is a bonus but not important. We are looking for someone confident and skilled on their instrument. The songs are simple but we like to make interesting and effective arrangements with good dynamics and lots of harmonies. If interested please email.
We are looking for someone with a good personality, commitment to one band, roughly around our ages (mid 20's to early 30's). Drum set is not manditory but it doesn't hurt. At least for jamming, bring something to bang on!

Who's the parasite? (Crazy Town)

To the poor misguided fellow who wrote:

"If you have no gigs why would I want you in my band?"

My question to you would be:

If it is as you say "your band" then why would you expect anyone else to book gigs for you?

Sounds like you are the one who needs an agent. It's too bad that they are such a rare commodity these days. All due to a bunch moronic, no talent, mavericks who decided years ago it would be a good idea to ruin it for everybody else. See these dim witted, wanna be entrepreneurs started going into bars with a bunch of their half assed, weekend warrior buddies, who wouldn't know a D string from a Ride Cymbal and undercut the agents costs by booking themselves. This drove the price down so low that it put most agents out of business. As the price continued to plummet so did the talent of the players, and as the talent continued to decrease so did the interest in live music, as the interest declined so did the size of the crowds. Get the picture?

What these self booking geniuses did not realize was that, contrary to their beliefs, the agents actually did serve a purpose. Their job was to act as a buffer so to speak, to keep no talent, blow hard, hacks like these guys out of the clubs so that they wouldn't kill the market. You see by making sure that the bands going into the bars had actual talent and would be worth the price of admission, this kept people coming out to the clubs, which of course kept the bar owners happy, which in turn kept the "real musicians" working. Boy do I miss those days. The days when you actually had to know how to play an instrument and put on some kind of show in order to be able to get a gig.

So in answer to your question "I don't get it, ...why do they (musicians) think life owes them?" We do not. We just figure the self booking morons who ruined it for the rest of us do. We did not spend decades of our lives, locked away practicing for hours a day, honing our craft to perfection, only to be reduced to nothing more than cheap, penny ante street hustlers begging for nickels and dimes. Most of us would rather go into teaching than cheapen ourselves and our talent like that. As a matter of fact a lot of us have. You see, those of us who are "professionals" remember what those days were like. We were fine with the way things were. We weren't the ones who screwed everything up. Why should we be the ones to pay for it? We are musicians not booking agents. Had I wanted to be involved in the business aspect of things I would have gone to business school not music school.

Which brings me to your statement, and I quote "You are either a "Musician" (do it all including bookings) or you are a "player" (hang out feeding off the booking work of other hard-working musicians)"

What dictionary do you own? Last time I checked musician means "someone who plays music". In fact I looked it up.

Taken from the Cambridge Dictionary:

Musician
/mjuːˈzɪʃ.ən/ n
noun
1. someone who is skilled in playing music, usually as their job

Taken From Dictionary.com

mu⋅si⋅cian
[myoo-zish-uhn]
–noun
1. a person who makes music a profession, esp. as a performer of music.
2. any person, whether professional or not, skilled in music.

Sorry chum, but I couldn't find any definition that included "do it all including bookings". I did find this however.

booking agent
noun
1.someone who engages a person or company for performances

Hmmm? How 'bout that. A booking agent, books performers and bands. Who'd-a- thunk it?

I have played literally thousands of gigs with self bookers over the years and the one thing they all had in common was that none or them, not one, had even a quarter of the musical talent of any of the players who were backing them up. This has proven to be a constant in my twenty some year career. What they did have that the other players did not however was that special kind of aggressive personality akin to that of a good salesmen. (Coincidentally also a quality found in most good booking agents) One positive thing I can say about these self booking types is that they could have done a lot better for themselves and the "real musicians" they worked with had they kept their egos in check, lost the delusions of themselves possessing any real musical talent and just did what they should have done in the first place... became booking agents and left the music to the professionals.

Hey!
Well, i have this saxophone that i played for 5-6 years, and since ive moved to montreal its been sitting in its case because I cant find a band I am interested in...I am looking for something large, or something with more than 1 saxophone player...I play tenor, So idealy im looking for something that would have another tenor and whatever else.....doesnt really matter to me, I just really miss playing my sax...I mostly play off sheet music so we would have to play stuff thats available on that, or with someone that can compose something. As for the type of music, Im pretty much into anything, i like classical, or anything up to date...when I played in a band befor, we did things like shrek, harry potter, christmas music... theme songs and anything classical...i was in a lot of pit bands for musicals also at schools.
anyway, if you or anyone you know might be interested in putting a band together let me know, I would LOVE to start playing again!

thank you!!
If someone's not bitchin' about West Island jam sessions, then they're bitchin' about Robbie Tucker.
If they're not bitchin' about him, then they're bitchin' about JF Harvey, the bassist looking for work. Now they're bitchin" about Mr. Flip.
Seriously, what gives? I thought musicians were supposed to be hip, cool or whatever.
It's seems like there's a handful of holier than thou jerkoffs, who've annointed themselves the authorities on what can't, can, should or shouldn't be posted on Craig's List.
It's amazing how brave people get when they can hide behind the anonimity of email. They'd probably piss in their pants before they'd have the balls to confront someone face to face.

You have no clue who I am, yet you can judge me?

I'm the guy whose ad "Mr. Flip" didn't like. And when he actually QUOTED me, I took exception.

It's not about who wins the argument. I frankly don't give a flying fuck what anyone thinks. I AM established on the blues scene here. I DO have many connections. I've played every major blues festival in Eastern Canada and the Maritimes and have brought MY band to Europe. I have over 25 awards and nominations in the industry. And YES, I do have an artist endorsement with a major guitar string company.

I'm not ashamed of my credentials.

I know what hard work is. I front a 7-piece band on vocals and guitar, and nothing has ever come easy.

So why put an ad on Craigslist? Well, I recently started playing bass again and was looking for some side work. What on earth is so god-damned wrong with that? I put the word out directly to fellow band-leaders as well. I'm just looking to leave no stone unturned. This is my first go at Craigslist, and frankly I'm quite disappointed to get reactions like that. I figured it was another way to make some new contacts.

All you so-called experts out there need to get off your high horses and calm the fuck down.

Yeah, the music biz is tough. Especially with bozos like you guys around.

Anyway. Nice knowing you. I'll remove my incredibly offensive ad and let all you basement dwellers shit on those of us who have dedicated their lives to entertaining people and making some well-earned bucks.

And for those of you who didn't see my original ad, here it is (WARNING: this is obviously VERY offensive. Discretion is highly advised)....

Rock band starting out and looking for a competent drummer (Montreal)

Intermediate drummer needed for rock band where the love of music and artistic integrity come first.

We are all close to or around 30.

Dedication, drive, work ethic, respect for others and punctuality are musts. No druggies, no drunks.

Looking for a true musical experience, something real and honest, rooted in the desire to make the best music we possibly can.

Need someone who has a certain amount of creative ability and mechanical skill on their instrument, but desire to play, common goals, tastes, chemistry and philosophy are more important. No big egos here. Creatively we do what's best for the song. We're in development and of intermediate level. Although we can certainly play and write, we are still learning our instruments and for the most part have little academic musical education. We have no touring experience and minimal live experience. We're looking for someone to grow with us, or with the patience to allow us to develop our skills to an advanced level.

This is a serious endeavor, we'd like to make a living doing this.

Practice is Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. You're expected to work at home too. You need to own a drum set (or two) so you can keep one at the space and one wherever you practice or have some other way to play outside practice. Rent for the rehearsal space is 55 $ monthly payable on the last Saturday of every month.

Musically: We are not a band where "attitude" and "image" are more noticeable than the music. Maybe this will doom us to failure. Whatever. We like an honest representation. We're not into endless screaming, barking, or adolsecent whining. We like different textures. We don't like "walls" of guitars, but rather aim for memorable riffs or melodies. We don’t like cacophonous collages of sound. We're looking for a stripped down yet polished sound. Sometimes rough but with clear, strong, discernible melodies. We like bands who have the versatility to go hard, soft, and everywhere in between. Some influences, since that is what people do: Pearl Jam, The Who, Neil Young, The Tragically Hip.. If any, or better yet all, of this stuff makes some kind of sense to you then we should talk and see if we can make some beautiful music together.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself: your age, background, perhaps a link to some music. Thanks!

Mr. Flip (Anyplace)

I don't usually reply to this sort of post but for once I'll make an exception. I will also admit that I know who the original poster was, a friend, so I'll try to be fair all around.

He nailed it but ...

There are too many people in the business who only want gigs and don't actually want to work. They feel that they've made their place and they ought to be "in demand." It's quite simply part of the narcism we see in the artistic bent. They don't need Craigslist, they need an agent.

The truth is the so called, "Maggots" Mr. Flip refers to are "journeymen" with a craft, talent or trade to flog. Nothing wrong with that so long as we remember they are not the type of people you want to do long term business with, they are flighty and non-commital - it's their way of earning income. Look at them as "project people."

In my 40 years as a musician in Montreal I've been a player, journeyman, dedicated business (bands) partner, co-owner of bands, competition winner, short-timer employee at Steve's (now there's a feat of survival) and now I produce and perform under my own name. I am a successful entrepreneur outside of music and understand what makes a business succeed or fail, music or otherwise.

Mr. Flip wants to run a business. The "Maggots" (and I spell that with a capital "M") just want to put bread on their table and live week-to-week, month-to-month, and collect residuals. That's fair too. Some of those residuals can be decent long-term earners if you get in with the right kind of crowd. But what Mr. Flip, I think, is worried about, if you take him seriously and read between the lines, are the opportunists who will come along and make a very smiling face and say, "Mr.Flip, I just love your gigs, let's get rich together" until another "good thing" comes along. So Mr. Flip is really concerned about being taken advantage of by some lazy opportunist. Maybe he should have put it that way. I have to agree; there are too many opportunists but that's like saying a wolf has too many teeth. Muscians are, by nature, opportunistic and will always go for the best thing on tap. Of course there are exceptions and you do meet the odd straight-shooter but, and this is 40 years talking again, your best friend will put you on a shelf for more bread in this business. I've seen it too many times. Luckily I'm a hard-as-nails businessman and have been successful in weeding out the bad-apples but it takes skill and time to find the right mix - sounds just like the trials and tribulations of forming a band.

In the end Mr. Flip's argument wins the day by a few points I'd say. There are too many stories of so called "established, well known, good name, well-connected, played with everyone" (that one does get me because I wonder why, if they are so well known and established, their phone isn't ringing off the wall and they need to scratch-up gigs here on, of all places, Craigslist?) musicians who take others for a ride - that's the 40 years talking one more time.

But Mr. Flip needs to beware; his "maggot" friends are not going anywhere so he'd better buck-up and try a little harder to stay his course. Never mind the losers, stick with the winners; it's the only way to success in anything we do.

Glad to see someone finally broached the subject, it's dead in here.

This is not a nice business, Joni Mitchell was right.

I'm looking for bands who already or will soon have good recorded track that need some good professional mixing. I've been doing mix and mastering for a year now at full time and I've really find my passion into that element. I'm working on my future website and myspace and I want more and more stuff to put in my folio. So I search for cool, interesting musicians with a good recorded wav(or aiff) tracks that need to be mix. I don't ask for any money, I just want to be able to put the mix i'll do on my website and to send it as a folio to other people. If you have questions or if you're interested contact as soon as you can. I can send you 2 or 3 songs I've work on. And so you know, I like working the mix with the musicians, ask them their opinions. I don't take the tracks and then give you the result 2 weeks later without asking what you think of it.

I write songs and strong melodies on keys/guitar and record the pieces in ableton.
I'd love to find the right collaborator to take these pieces and mix 'em up like Dangermouse did the White Album- or Gibbard and Figurine collaborated to make 'em Postal Service - vox/emceeing is welcome over the top too.

Hello everybody, i'm looking for somebody to teach me piano tuning... i am a pianist with a bmus from McGill, and i had started an apprenticeship a while ago in Calgary, but I had to move before i could take it very far. I have most of the basic tools (hammer, felt strips, triangles, some voicing tools, quality pitch fork), and have done some practice, i hear beats and overtones just fine and had some practice doing half temperaments, etc. I also have a good piano to practice on at home.. however i have a day job so i would need someone willing to take me along on tunings in the evening, or sundays, or to just flat out teach me. I am willing to pay, or to help in any way with tuning/maintenance work that i can, but mostly you would have the satisfaction of helping a fellow musician and instrument lover with one of my dreams, and you know the old "give a man a fish" story... !
Anyone willing to take me on, please give me a shout, thanks!

An independent group of students is putting on a production of Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog in the first week of December 2010 at McGill's Players' Theatre.

We're looking for a drummer, a guitarist, and a bassist to join us in this exciting project.

The time commitment is relatively small, we'll be rehearsing twice a week for the upcoming week, and a little more when we move into the theater. The show has around 10 songs, some of them extremely short, and the music will be provided.

If you're interested, we're excited to hear from you!! Email us ASAP at horrible.mcgill@gmail.com with a little about yourself - we're looking to get started right away.

Thanks!

Recording Project Looking for Singers (Westmount)

I suppose the first thing that I should say is that this is NOT a paying gig.

Okay, if you're still reading, here's the deal:
I'm currently recording what was initially intended to be a full-length original album. As I've delved deeper into recording, I've come to two important conclusions. Most importantly, I've learned that I'm really not that good a singer, and that my range is extremely limited. I need other voices on these recordings. Many of these recordings require a female singer, and some of them require male singers that just are flat-out better singers than I am.
The other conclusion I've made is that I'm likely recording two full-lengths, or at the very least, one full-length and one EP. The reason why I've reached this conclusion is that my compositions tend to gravitate in two directions: studio-based electronic ambient rock (à la Years, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, and to a lesser extent, The Postal Service or maybe Headphones) and alt-country-folk (à la Billy Bragg, early Leonard Cohen, Bright Eyes, early Wilco, Nick Drake and so on). Those are not cookie-cutter musical references: I wouldn't say that any of my work sounds identical (or even near-identical) to any of those references; I just want to give you a broad picture of where I'm at.
Most of these songs are in various stages of completion: some are 95% done, and just need some backup vocals. Others need more work. I'm not specifically interested in musical collaborators, although collaboration is welcome. I'm basically just looking to overcome my own limitations as an artist, and get at least one album completed.
I've got tons of contacts in the music industry, and I do intend to shop the completed product to record labels. If that doesn't work though, I'll release the album(s) independently. In the event that either happens, we can then talk about some kind of restitution.
Anyway, if I've piqued your interest, send me a message, and maybe we can get together.

Cheers!

Are you a Musician without a Myspace Music page? Unfortunatlety you may not have the time, or knowhow, to create and design a page of your own. Having a Myspace Music page is a necessity these days. It has become an essential promo tool, and a cheap alternative to having an actual website. Every band needs a Music page, from mainstream Metallica to indie Friendly Fires. It allows fans and potential fans to easily listen to your music, and get a good feel about what your music is about. Post your Music, Show Listings, Pictures, Videos, Blog, and more.

This is where I come in. I am by no means a professional graphic artist, but I have alot of experience creating Myspace Music pages, for friends as well as my own projects. So I would basically sign up, customize the layout, post music, pictures, videos, post a banner, make it look it nice, then hand the site and password over to you. Id then be available for questions and help, to allow you to do updates on your own.
All this, for 50$...thats it. Im also quite able with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator so basic graphic design services are also available, like custom banners, party flyers, etc, at (very) affordable prices.

So, If you need a basic page...like this www.myspace.com/thefreelancewhales ..like this www.myspace.com/shineniteclub ..or like this www.myspace.com/waxmastawes ... Get at me for more info!! I live in Montreal, I accept cash and soon Paypal.

Hi
I'm a singer/songwriter and I would like to have a band that bases its music on vocal harmonies. I'm into indie rock (all kinds: folk, electro-rock, heavier stuff... I don't mind.) So for now I'm looking for 1 person to write songs with. We could add the rest of the band later on.
The ideal person would be able to write and execute his/her own vocal parts. I'm looking for someone with a higher pitched voice than mine.
On top of that, if you can write a few songs and play piano/keys, and take criticism without exploding in screams and tears, that'd be the perfect match!
Male or female, I don't mind.
BTW I'm 26yo and I'd love to write stuff in French as well.

Watsup guys,

This is a reposting of an old ad I posted a few weeks ago. I got a lot of good responses but I still have a few spots open.

I'm looking for bands to fill some slots starting in January. I'm working for a company called Music Is Life Ent. from Ottawa that has started branching out here to Montreal. They are very successful over there and have help tons of bands get exposure and make some money. We're looking to do the same thing over here.

The company started to give bands a way to get shows and make money without getting ripped off by big companies. I'm sure most of you have experienced how bad some of these shows are run.

Not only will these shows give you a stage and an opportunity we will also hook you up with bands from out of town. For every show, we will have a touring band come in to play with you guys, If any of you want to go out there to play shows we can arrange that too.

For now here are the dates:

Jan 15th (Friday), FULL SET
Jan 30th (Saturday) , 2 SPOTS LEFT
Feb 12th (Friday), 3 SPOTS LEFT
Feb 26th (Friday), 1 SPOT LEFT
Mar 12th (Friday), 3 SPOTS LEFT
Mar 26th (Friday) 3 SPOTS LEFT

Tickets for the January 15th show will soon be available for those who want to come check it out. They will be $7 in advance and $10 at the door.
The bands playing that night are (in order of appearance):

Call Me Hollywood (local) www.myspace.com/callmehollywood
The 4Heads (local) www.myspace.com/the4heads
New World Order (local) www.myspace.com/newworldorder4
Bonne continuation,

First off, I'd like to introduce myself. Name's George, I go to a uni in NY right now and am preparing to be in Montreal next Jan for something bigger, for personal pursuits, for art and good times.
I have been the frontman for a band in high school, and followed through with a band in college.
I would like to work with the music of an experimental, artistic group/band and make it fun, make it real, give it the stuff that will make it memorable in a studio or live.

I don't have any formal vocal training, but practice on my own time. I am into image, sound and character of a band.
Influences are: Queen, Lady GaGa, Muse, Keane, No Doubt, and Electronic bands such Air and Royksopp.

I am looking for bands who are first and foremost, willing to experiment with their music, keep an open-mind, while playing what they are passionate about.
I am perfectly bilingulal, height-weight proportionate, lebanese originally, and lived most of my life in Dubai before coming to Cornell University in the U.S for a Film Studies degree.

NOUS QUI NOUS AVONS TOUT REÇU, NOUS AVONS UNE OBLIGATION MORALE DE LEUR OUVRIR LES PORTES QUI LEUR DONNERONT LA CHANCE DE rayonner AU NIVEAU MONDIAL.
NOUS SOMMES EN CE MOMENT DANS UNE ÉCOLE PRIMAIRE-SECONDAIRE DÉJÀ EXISTANTE A ST-MARC, UN ENDROIT TRANQUILLE À 1HRE1 / 2 DE PORT-AU-PRINCE.

HOLLA!

SED SED recently lost their drummer and is on the search for a permanent member.
We're not a professional band and we are not looking for a professional drummer. We're looking for someone with a passion for music; someone creative and open minded; someone who is reliable and dedicated to the cause; and someone who is willing to play a show from time to time. We are not looking to take over the world...we're more of the mind-set of "whatever happens, happens" or "it is what it is". That being said...we do think that we have a unique indie-rock thing going on...contributions to the sound are always welcome.

Hi , I am 5 strings E.Violin Player and looking for the opportunity to play with. Like an E. guitar , playing with distortion ,sfx and so on.
In addition to this , I am good at playing odd time signature because I used to play progressive rock , fusion and jazz band a lot.
I had experienced playing E.Violin as a work before I came Montreal from Tokyo. So I would like to do as well.
Also I have educated classical piano for a long time since I was a small kid (against my will though.....).

I was playing serious Pop-Progressive Guitarless Metal trio band like (Eddie Jobson's) UK ,RUSH and so on.
It consisted of [E.violin , Keyboard, Chorus & Composition ] , [Lead Vocal & Bass Guitar] and [Drums , Keyboard & Chorus ].
All members have classical music background basically. Ideally I would like to play such a type of band once more.

If you are professional , considering playing music as a work or anything else serious , please feel free to contact me.

Thanks,
