Health and Safety Specialist
Reports To: Director of Human Resources
Location: Montreal
You will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of Safety and Health policies, procedures and programs as well as oversee facility safety personnel. Oversight for safety practices, accident and workers' compensation claims investigations, accident reporting procedures, compliance monitoring, record keeping and reporting processes to effectively reduce risk, increase safety awareness, and manage costs, while optimizing productivity. The position will report to and work closely with Human Resources, but will have substantial interface with Operations in improving the safety program including training and change management to enhance a culture of safety awareness, participating in the hiring process, new employee orientation, employee coaching, discipline and counselling issues.
Duties and Responsibilities
Participate in the development of safety and health policies, practices and
Assist in developing company safety and health procedures and programs
Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary group and be a team leader
Monitor new legislation as it relates to safety and health standards and practices and facilitate changes, as necessary
Identify, investigate, report and provide guidance relative to root causes for incidents, employee safety programs, regulatory compliance
Participate in the development of materials
Develop and implement solutions for emergency preparedness plans for company sites
Monitor and analyze safety trends and implement programs designed to improve company results
Implement standards of performance, benchmarks and key performance indicators that allow accurate measurement of performance and improvement;
Assist in the development of consistent pre-employment practices
Provide leadership, guidance and technical support to operations management and safety committees
Act as a contact for state regulatory agencies regarding matters involving safety and health
Other projects and responsibilities as may be assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
Bilingual in English & French strongly preferred
Excellent leadership, change management and team building skills
Excellent working knowledge of Federal regulations and various Provincial/State laws regarding safety and health compliance
Multiple location experience a plus
Proficient in personal computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
Knowledge and experience in training in a group environment
Attention to detail in composing, typing and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines
Ability to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality and sensitive information;
Ability to build an effective team, develop and maintain positive working relationships and articulate objectives
Excellent spelling, grammar and written communication skills
Strong ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines
Detail oriented with excellent organization skills
Education and Experience
Minimum of five years safety management and leadership experience
Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in safety and health or a related discipline preferred
CSSE Designation preferred but not required.
Knowledge of Manufacturing environment
Outstanding working knowledge of principles and practices of Safety and Health
