Has anyone reading this ever had a bike stolen where:

1) The bike frame was locked to something secure with a half-decent U-lock (at least a $20 Kryptonite)?
2) It was locked in a public place (ie. on a street where people pass by and/or people could see the bike from the windows of homes, cafés or stores)?
3) It was stolen between 6 am and midnight?

I have never lost a bike in Montreal under those circumstances in more than 30 years.

I have also come to the conclusion that:

1) Cable locks are useless (except to secure a seat or wheel to a frame that is locked with a U-lock)
2) Thieves are very bold in the dead of night (one dared to unscrew the baby seat of my wife's bike from the bike, ON OUR FRONT BALCONY, because my wife had locked the baby seat -- and not the bike frame -- to the railing!)
3) Thieves will take unlocked seats and wheels at any time of day (but I have yet to experience them breaking even a half-decent u-lock during the day where people are around.

Your comments are welcome!
